CHAPTER 1

It is an extremely cold and windy winter morning in the northern part of the Bronx. Everything looks so white and frozen and not a soul is seen outside. Children look through their windows at the mean winter's snow.

A few miles away on top of the highest tree, Mother Eagle is very restless. She moves back and forth in her eyrie. She is anxious about laying her egg. Father Eagle stands afar on a branch of the tree watching closely. "What is taking the egg so long?" he wonders. He breathes out loudly and says to Himself, "patience, patience".

Mother Eagle gives a big push. Finally, an egg comes out and they both flap their wings in excitement! "Oh how beautiful you are", Father Eagle and Mother Eagle remark. "You may have a brother or sister in a day or two", they say to the new egg.

"Why haven't I laid more eggs? Other eagles usually have a clutch of two or three eggs", Mother Eagle says to Father Eagle on the fourth day after the appearance of the first egg. "Be patient my dear, let's wait 'til the end of the week", Father Eagle says to her. No new eggs show up by the end of the week, however, Mother Eagle and Father Eagle still give each other beaky smiles. "It's just going to be you then", they whisper to the egg.

There have been three snowstorms already. It's now thirty-four days since Mother Eagle laid her egg. They really want to see their hatchling's face! Father Eagle and Mother Eagle take turns sitting on the egg. Mother Eagle was dozing off while incubating the egg. Suddenly she felt the egg crack! C-rrrroaa-ccc-kn! "Oh my, Finally!", she exclaims.

She calls out to Father Eagle who has gone to look for some food. As she gets up, Father Eagle flies into the nest. Tears of joy well up in their eyes as they they look at their little hatchling. Unlike other bald eagles this hatchling has golden feathers instead of gray. But they are still happy to see him.

"We'll call you Aquila", Father Eagle says. Aquila is hungry and begins to chip restlessly. "Good thing you went for some food", Mother Eagle laughs. "Easy little one, we'll feed you now", they calm him down. Aquila eats all his food. "What a beautiful baby he is", Father Eagle whispers to Mother Eagle, as Aquila falls fast asleep.
