Overview

This richly illustrated book, with accompanying DVD, presents Dr Guimberteau's groundbreaking work, and explains its significance for manual therapists and movement teachers, and its implications for what they do with patients and clients. Dr Guimberteau is the first person to film living human tissue through an endoscope in an attempt to understand the organisation of living matter. He has developed his own concept of the multifibrillar structural organisation of the body, of which the microvacuole is the basic functional unit. He has also developed a concept of global dynamics and continuous matter. His films confirm the continuity of fibres throughout the body and show how adjacent structures can move independently in different directions and at different speeds while maintaining the stability of the surrounding tissues. This role is carried out by what he calls the "Microvacuolar Collagenic Absorbing System". He has opened a window into a strange world of fibrillar chaos and unpredictable behaviour, and has revealed the morphodynamic nature of the fibrils that constitute the connective tissue, as well as the fractal, non-linear behaviour of these fibrils. His work ties in with that of Donald Ingber on tensegrity within the cytoskeleton, and the links between the cytoskeleton and the Extra Cellular Matrix as described by James Oschman.

It examines the microanatomic structures of the fascia and musculature, using breathtaking images of the many structures it covers. The book adds a wealth of new information about fascia, transforming how it will be seen moving forward. An accompanying CD-ROM provides beautiful video illustrations.
Purpose: The book uncovers living anatomy of the fascial and muscular structures in the human body. It is novel in that is does not rely on cadaveric imaging, but is based on digital endoscopy videography, where we can see into the human body. It includes numerous high-quality images and a CD-ROM with videos of the images in the book. This is a massive and important new book that adds substantially to our knowledge of the human body.
Audience: This likely will have an audience composed of a number of differing constituencies. It will be of use to those who practice manual therapy (i.e. osteopaths, chiropractors) because of the way it illustrates underlying anatomic structures. Surgeons may find it useful as well, particularly those who do microsurgical procedures. Students in these disciplines also will benefit. The author is the leading expert in the field, and the book is an impressive addition to the knowledge of human anatomy.
Features: The book discusses human tissue architecture and theories of human tissue elasticity, as well as general and detailed anatomical considerations, fibrillar continuity and form, mobility and adaptability of tissue, and closes with a discussion of the interrelationship of these areas, all while using a vast number of high-quality images to help demonstrate concepts. In doing so, the author begins to challenge long-held theories and beliefs related to human tissue, based on carefully detailed study of video endoscopy.
Assessment: I found this book endlessly fascinating. It provides a look at human tissues I felt I knew a great deal about, and has made me understand how little I actually do know. It presents novel concepts that are based on more than 1,000 surgical procedures. It dives into areas such as tensegrity and fractalization, new concepts that are just now being seen as important. This is a real game changer in how we look at human tissue. This book is highly recommended.
