Gr 3-5-In the first book, Anderson provides a brief overview of the immigrant experience and the history of Ellis Island. A simple chart illustrates the patterns of immigration, and sidebars describing the experiences of various families personalize the information. This accessible title will be useful for reports. The second book takes the same approach, but with less success. There are some inaccuracies, including the statement that "Most of the missions were in Southern California." In fact, they stretch from San Diego to north of San Francisco. The ultimate plan was to build them approximately one day's journey apart. At times, Anderson simplifies the history too much, as in "the missions were also responsible for the enslavement and deaths of most of the Native people in the southern and mid-coast areas of California." The relationships of the friars, the Spanish government, and the military were more complex than that and each had its own priorities, some more noble than others. The book has the same general layout, including lots of full-color photos and illustrations. Additional topics include a biographical sketch of Father Jun'pero Serra, daily life at the missions, and the restoration movement in the early 20th century.
