Often, the most difficult obstacles an artist faces aren't technical but psychological. Kanter writes for those who are motivated to paint or draw but have not yet integrated the creative impulse into daily life. Presently at Portland State University, she has taught painting for 25 years. Her method involves creative journal exercises done with no thought of public viewing. She advises creating at least one page a day: "write all over the page, or not at all. Use color, or shades of gray. Use pencil, pen, collage, or watercolor. Make quick notations or fully developed paintings." The only rule is that there are no rules. Results are not important; creativity and innovation are. While the theory is fine, the execution is not always as lively as that found in Peggy Hadden's The Artist's Quest for Inspiration. Hadden's book brims with motivational exercises, meditations, journal ideas, and the uses of travel and music. Her discussion of the experiences of artists like Ben Shahn and Diego Rivera raises the level of inspiration.
