As in each of the publisher's book in the "Diseases and Disorders" series, Asthma aims to provide a clear explanation of the problem, causes, treatment and how people live with the disease. Asthma is so widespread and increasing that it is important to understand the challenges of this disease. An interesting chapter on Alternative and Complementary Treatment Strategies is included, as is a chapter on the potential causes of asthma in the modern western world. A useful addition would have been information about how to immediately help a person having an asthma attack. The writing is concise, logical and follows through on premises, using personal anecdotes (from interviews) to lighten clinical information or statistics. Black-and-white photos and several diagrams are included. There are chapter notes/references at the end; unfortunately, the most credible medical sources are secondarily quoted from lesser-known sources (i.e. information from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma is quoted from another author's book). An original source quote would provide more credibility, especially around a subject for which such information is very accessible. Many quotes are from media sources. There is a glossary (words are not highlighted in text and some definitions are oversimplified or incorrect; i.e. a dust mite is of the arachnid family, not an insect), a useful lists of age-related books and Web sites for more information, a list of organizations to contact, and an index.
