One of two in the "My Cookbook" series, this edition focuses on 25 sweet and savory dishes that require simple mixing and baking techniques. The book begins with informing the readers about symbols that may appear in each recipe to indicate difficulty level, whether adult help may be needed (e.g., working with knives, temperature conversions for convection and conventional ovens, figuring out centigrade and Fahrenheit). The recipes are organized into the following categories of recipes: "Little Bakes," "Big Bakes," "Quick Bakes," and "Bake and Take." Baking techniques such as greasing a pan, separating eggs, folding, grating, and rolling pastry are explained in simple text and illustrations. Each two-page recipe, includes a list of ingredients and equipment needed, prep time, cooking time, and the number of servings. Step-by-step illustrations describe the process for preparing the mixture, the baking time, and any additional steps necessary when the dish comes out of the oven. The recipes are a nice mix of savory and sweet, and they should appeal to young teens. While these are not exactly health conscious recipes—sugar, fat and cheese are used liberally—but many of these techniques are useful to learn. Reviewer: Meredith Kiger, Ph.D.
