Description: This book, revised to reflect the growth in PET and PET/CT imaging, presents concepts at a basic level designed to help nuclear medicine professionals in their training and preparation for board certification. The first edition was published in 2005.
Purpose: It captures the essence of the subject and includes chapters on all pertinent areas.
Audience: It is meant as a preparatory guide for physicians, technologists, and residents in training or preparing for board certification, and therefore may not satisfy those looking for a more complete description. The author is a world expert on radiopharmacy
Features: Among the topics the book covers are radioactive decay and interaction of radiation with matter; PET and PET/CT scanning systems; data acquisition and corrections; image reconstruction, storage and display; performance characteristics of PET scanners and QA for PET and CT; cyclotron and production of PET radionuclides; synthesis of PET radiopharmaceuticals; regulations governing PET radiopharmaceuticals; reimbursement for PET procedures; design and cost of a PET centre; and procedures for PET studies. The book ends with several appendixes, a useful glossary of terms, and answers for some of the questions at the end of each chapter. The book is small, approximately 6 in. x 9 in. with fewer than 245 pages, making it easy to carry and read on the fly.
Assessment: This second edition has been extensively revised to update information on detectors, scanners, and data collection. It includes updated information on NEMA testing and a brief review of accreditation, two areas which have become major issues with recent changes in the law and insurance requirements. The regulatory review is based on United States standards and may not be helpful in countries that use different standards. It includes only a brief review of mobile PET/CT units although, unfortunately, these are the norm in many areas of the country and they create some unique shielding and safety issues. The book is relatively inexpensive and covers the subject at the basic level very well. "
