Puppy pals Big Dog and Little Dog go off for an enjoyable walk. They think about kitties that they like to chase and soon they come upon a fluffy black and white animal—but when they run after it they are met with a super surprise. The creature runs away and then stops to lift its tail. The feisty animal begins spraying both dogs and they are stopped in their tracks by the horrid odor. The creature is not a kitty but a skunk and both dogs now smell bad. They do not like the smell so they give up their walk and head home. They go inside their house during the middle of a party being held by several properly dressed women. The party makes the dogs happy but the women are overwhelmed. This level 1 book from the “Green Light Readers” series provides a tale to which young readers can relate and that can be read by children in kindergarten. It has excellent back matter to supplement the story, including a maze, a sequencing page, a word scramble page, a fact page, and a fill-in-the blank page. Simple illustrations are engaging and humorous. This book is a good addition to Pre-K and early primary classrooms that encourage guided and independent reading.
