PreS-Gr 3-This terrific birthday party package has everything needed to plan successful parties for young children. Of the 11 songs on the cassette, two celebrate the birthday, while the rest are movement or game songs. Excellent vocals and instrumental backup are evident throughout, and the audio quality is consistently good. The calypso-style "New Birthday Song" starts out the party, followed by "Birthday Bee Bop," a contemporary-style movement/activity song that invites participants to hop, put a foot out, touch the ground, etc. "Pin the Bow on the Birthday Bear" bounces along to accompany the colorful poster game provided-that of a large bear, with polka-dot bowties to "pin" at its throat. Then children can dance to the traditional "Hokey Pokey," which has a bouncy piano arrangement that will get them moving. "Pass the Hot Potato" is a game song. "Let's Play Musical Chairs" uses a narrator and marching music to explain and run the game through 14 cycles. The calypso-style "Birthday Limbo" teaches children how to limbo. A marching band-style song, "It's Your Special Day Parade," encourages youngsters to parade around in honor of the birthday child. A narrator explains to children how to play "Simon Says," and the instructions and music continue through seven cycles. Country-style music enhances the playing of "Duck, Duck, Goose." Finally, a contemporary-style song describes the ingredients and making of a "Ten-Layer Birthday Cake" which ultimately plops on the floor. The cassette ends with non-narrated, instrumental music for "Musical Chairs." The accompanying booklet has suggestions to the party planner for the different games, includes seven additional party games, and provides a birthday hat pattern for the children to decorate and wear.
