Xander was the first supernatural being Elizabeth captured when she decided to recreate the gladiator games. He's been her unwilling slave and partner for the past two years. She fitted his neck with a device she called an Immobilizer, that ensured he did exactly what she demanded. An immobilizer is a device Elizabeth created to control her fighters. It was basically a magic device that forced the wearer to obey all commands from Elizabeth or anyone she designates.
Over time, Xander realised there were flaws in the Immobilizer. He knew he couldn’t break Elizabeth’s command but he could twist the meaning enough to benefit himself.
