Cartoon illustrations in reds and blues and a succinct text work together in an effective design, building the dramatic humor. An illustrator's aim is to keep important parts of the story out of a picture book's gutter, and this funny, interactive book is a superbly self-aware - in more ways than one - exemplar of what not to do.” The Horn Book
“A lively physical slant on the interactive picture book.” BCCB
“It's quick, fizzy entertainment, good as a waiting-room read or an addition to the bedtime pile.” Publishers Weekly
“A carnivorous book invites readers to participate.” Kirkus Reviews
“Byrne's comical play on the book's gutter will entertain kids and adults . . . This book will make for a good one-on-one reading, giving children an opportunity to save the day.” School Library Journal

Young Bella is out walking her dog when it suddenly disappears into the center of the book. Bella tries pulling her dog out by the leash to no avail. Her friend Ben, a dog rescue van, even a police car and fire truck show up to help, but everyone disappears. Bella finally takes matters into her own hands; but when she goes in to save her dog, she too disappears. A note appears on the page asking readers to help save them all by shaking the book. Readers will delight in saving the characters as well as a slight twist at the end. Byrne writes a fun and silly book that readers will adore interacting with. His appealing illustrations stand out on a soft background. Young children will love this as a read-aloud and will beg to hold the book. Bella’s charming note to the reader will be a huge hit. Parents will not mind reading this one over and over. Reviewer: Aimee Isaac; Ages 3 to 6.
