Born in Polar's Den
On the cusp of adulthood, Meeka is about to confront a clash of lifestyles and cultures as she leaves her community in Canada's Far North and begins her education in the South. Being a teenager in Nunavut comes with its own challenges, but as a daughter of an Inuk hunter, Meeka has enjoyed a certain status in her community. Now Meeka goes from being a community leader to a meek student as she is lured into the harsh complexities of navigating a university town.

Born in Polar's Den is a coming-of-age novel that unapologetically explores the social, political and demographic issues surrounding Canada's Arctic region and its aboriginal peoples. The author's interest in Inuit culture shines through as he examines the experiences of Nunavut's young people in their transition to adulthood in a modern age.

About the Author

Camilius Egeni, PhD, is a senior public administrator with expertise in budget development and public administration. He has previously published two non-fiction books examining suicide and motivation. This is his first work of fiction.

A long-time Nunavut resident, Dr. Egeni has first hand experience with the social and economic divides that exist among people in the northern territory. After watching so many young people travel to the South for school and struggle to succeed, he decided it was necessary to examine the barriers that exist for them in completing their studies.

A father of four, Dr. Egeni has a love of nature, photography and sport. He and his family reside in Iqaluit. When he isn’t working or writing, he spends time reading to his children and playing sports, including soccer and baseball.
