Part of the “Mouse Math” series, where each book deals with a different math concept, this paperback book continues the adventures of Albert the Mouse as he learns to recognize and create patterns. Sister Wanda cannot play checkers with Albert because she is too busy getting ready for her singing group’s big performance tomorrow, so Albert scooters over to Grandma’s where he helps her assemble a quilt. She shows him how using a pattern of different colored squares makes the quilt look better. On his way home, Albert begins to notice patterns everywhere—in the stripes of an awning or the flowers in a garden. He helps Wanda makes necklaces for the Nibblettes using another pattern with both shapes and colors. At the big show, Albert helps organize the Nibblettes, who have all showed up in three different colored shirts, to line up in a pattern so they look organized. Whimsical colored drawings and an upbeat approach will appeal to young children. Two pages of activity suggestions, to be moderated by an adult, follow the pictures and text.
