Description: Like the previous editions, this latest update of a book on microbiology and immunology is meant to help medical students prepare for USMLE Step 1. It is divided into topics that are expected to be found on the board exam to help students with their review. The previous edition was published in 2010.
Purpose: The authors state that the book is designed to be used by medical students to prepare for Step 1 of the USMLE taken at the end of the second year of class work. Passing this exam is a necessary rite of passage, and most students find a review book handy for preparation. This one seems to offer well-organized information.
Audience: The book is written for second-year medical students, although it could be a quick source of microbiology and immunology review for other exams.
Features: Chapters use an outline format and include many color illustrations. For each major category of microbes, the book presents fundamental material. This is followed by an organ-system infectious disease approach. Chapters end with a series of multiple-choice review test questions. This edition now includes detailed summary tables of the characteristics and details of the different agents causing a number of common infections. There are also four sets of board-style questions. Purchasers of the book also have access to an online systems-based table of contents/guide to help in reviewing for the exam with the fully searchable text as well as an interactive question bank. It should be noted that the textbook focuses on common microorganisms that are expected to appear on exam questions. However, some of the diseases that have become recent public health problems — such as Chikungunya and Ebola — are not mentioned.
Assessment: This is a well-done review book that covers most of the information that is likely to appear on Step 1 of the USMLE. It is not the only book of its type, but it provides a good summary of the facts that are needed for this exam.
