This graphic novel reference book focuses on Language Arts lesson plans. Each chapter is different and is written by a teacher or teachers who have used graphic novels in some positive way in a classroom setting. Marla Harris's chapter pairs Persepolis with teen literature to explore history through family stories. Carter uses The Amazing "True" Story of a Teenage Mom (Hyperion/DBG, 1998/VOYA February 1999) to put a modern spin on The Scarlet Letter. J. D. Schraffenberger used Gareth Hinds's graphic novel of Beowulf (Candlewick, 2007, (c)1999, 2000/VOYA June 2007) to aid students' visualizing and understanding of the Old English poem. Each of the ten chapters is an individual article that encompasses the diverse ability to tie graphic novels to middle and high school curriculum standards. Language arts teachers would be able to easily take some of these chapters and use immediately as a lesson plan. This resource is a good step in the right direction for integrating alternative formats-specifically graphic novels-into a classroom setting. Public libraries with professional collections that are geared toward teachers would find this book a fine resource for educators. The title is much better suited for school media centers because of the obvious curriculum connection.
