CHAPTER 1

Dixie was a duck hen. She liked living on Farmer Green's farm, but Dixie wanted a family of her own. It was time to start nesting!

Everywhere Dixie looked for a place to make her nest, it was too noisy. All day in the fowl yard and coop house, she heard honking, clucking, quacking, scratching, hissing, pecking, and cock-a-doodle-doo-ing. If she nested there, Dixie and her ducklings would never get their rest!

One day, Dixie went waddling down the road. She saw a huge pile of soft dirt. It was next to her friend Burton the Scarecrow's field; close to the creek and very quiet. The little duck's feathers fanned and fluttered with excitement. "This is a wonderful place for my nest," she quacked to herself.

Choosing just the right spot in the dirt, Dixie wiggled, jiggled, and twisted to form a cozy nesting bed. Now, she was ready to lay her eggs.

On Sunday, the nest had one egg.

On Monday, the nest had two eggs.

On Tuesday, the nest had three eggs.

On Wednesday, the nest had four eggs.

On Thursday, the nest had five eggs.

On Friday, the nest had six eggs.

On Saturday, the nest had seven eggs.

From Sunday to Saturday, it had been one busy week.

Dixie was proud of her seven large, lovely eggs. She couldn't wait to tell her friends how smooth and oval-shaped they were! Dixie hopped off the nest and flapped her wings. Away she went to share her important news.

"I have laid 7 beautiful eggs in 7 days," Dixie bragged to a turkey, who was sunning himself by the creek.

"That's nice," he gobbled.

Next, Dixie spied a chipmunk scurrying up a tree. "Wait, wait," Dixie quacked. "I have laid 7 smooth eggs in just one week."

"That's nice," the chipmunk squeaked.

Dixie had a grand afternoon visiting all of the animals near the creek. Far from her nest, she didn't see a dump truck and trailer pull up to the pile of dirt where her eggs rested in the warm sun. Soon, a front-end loader scooped a load of dirt from the pile. It took Dixie's eggs with it and emptied them into the dump truck!

After it was loaded, the truck was driven to Hill's Garden Shop, not far from Farmer Green's farm. "Hi Joe," the shop's owner, Mr. Hill, hollered to the driver. "Dump that dirt over by the sand pile. Then, fill your dump truck with gravel and take it back to Farmer Green's place. Please tell Mr. Green I said 'hello.'"

Joe drove over to the piles of sand and gravel and parked between them. While the dirt was being emptied, he didn't notice Dixie's seven duck eggs rolling out of the truck and onto the heap of sand. Luckily, it just so happened that the garden shop fans blowing warm air over the top of Mr. Hill's trays of seedling plants also heated the nearby piles of sand and gravel; and now Dixie's eggs.

Even though they had been moved from the nest, the seven duck eggs would be safe and warm!

After finishing his work at the garden shop, Joe returned to Farmer Green's place with the load of gravel. "Thank you 'much," Farmer Green said, examining the pile from top to bottom. "This load looks mighty fine."

"My pleasure," said Joe. "And Mr. Hill says, 'hello.'"

"Thanks, Joe. See ya later," Said Farmer Green.

"Let's spruce up the coop house while we wait for the next load," the busy farmer told his dog. "Come along, Pal."

Together, they left the field.
