Both the cover and the opening page of this book depict a beautiful butterfly with lots of color in its wings. Readers learn that a butterfly is an insect and while not all insects can fly butterflies do. A close look shows that the wings are covered with tiny scales, and we are told that often the patterns and colors provide protection. Sometimes brightly colored butterflies may be poisonous to certain animals. Another technique that butterflies use to protect themselves are large spots which look like big scary eyes located on their wings. The book point out that moths and butterflies do look alike but they are different. Moths are usually active at night while butterflies are active during the daytime. Butterflies drink nectar from flowers; their tongue is like a drinking straw. Another amazing fact about these creatures is the location of their taste buds, which are on their feet. Young readers are introduced to the entire lifecycle of the butterfly, starting as an egg, hatching to become a caterpillar, becoming a chrysalis, and finally emerging as a butterfly. The glossary defines seven terms. The illustrations are full-color and excellent photographs are set on crisp, white pages. According to the publisher, Kingfisher readers offer an exciting series developed with literacy experts to support and encourage young readers. Each book features clear, appealing text and illustrations packed with information about favorite nonfiction topics. This level 1 book is aimed at those children who are beginning to read. Short, simple sentences with familiar vocabulary and engaging pictures help readers understand the text and there is a simple glossary included.
