About the Author

TRUMAN STACEY, former editor of the Lake Charles (Louisiana) American Press, from 1961 through 1981, completed his 50th year as a journalist in 1990. He joined the American Press as a sports editor after having worked as a reporter for the Beaumont (Texas) Enterprise, the Oklahoma City Daily Oklahoman, the Detroit Free Press and the Washington (D.C.) Times Herald. Previous to that he earned bachelor's and master's degrees in history and political science from the University of Detroit. Stacey was the organizer and first president of the Southwest Louisiana Chapter of the Council for the Development of French in Louisiana (CODOFIL) and served as a member of the CODOFIL State Board of Directors. After retiring as editor of the American Press, Stacey was called back into service as director of communications for the Catholic Diocese of Lake Charles, a position he held through September of 1990. Stacey has been decorated by two Popes for his service to the Catholic Church. He is a Knight Commander of the Order of St. Gregory the Great, a Knight Commander With Star in the Order of the Holy Sepulchre, and a Chevalier of the French National Order of Merit. He's held a number of state and national offices with the Knights of Columbus, the National Catholic Committee on Scouting and the Boy Scouts of America. A native of Texas, he has lived in Lake Charles since 1950.
