This CD-ROM version is the initial presentation of THE classic orthopedic reference text in this format. It represents the ninth edition of Canale's Campbell's Operative Orthopedics - 5 Volume set (Mosby-Year Book, Inc., 1998). The purpose of creating a CD-ROM version is not only to provide instant access and availability to the computer-literate orthopedist, but also to provide an alternative form of accessing the extensive text of material and reference available from Campbell's. It is a worthy objective. This CD-ROM is designed to be the most important reference text in most orthopedist's libraries. It is central to core education in most residency programs. It continues to serve the important role the text has played by including offerings in this new format. Since this was advertised as CD-ROM, I assumed I could plug it into my laptop and have an easily portable set of Campbell's. This was not the case. Once I realized that this version interacts with the Internet, I found it easy to load, easy to navigate, and quite valuable. Perhaps the greatest value is the instant access referencing which allows the user to identify each discussion on a topic of choice in the entire text. I would have hoped that each reference could have been brought up and read. Many of the scanned images were not crisp and clear and original radiographs were particularly poor. Campbell's Operative Orthopedics has long been THE classic orthopedic reference text, the cornerstone of every orthopedist's library, and the starting point of most literature searches. This new format invites a new generation of orthopedists to continue to use Campbell's as a primary reference. Ifound it easy to install and access information. It gives orthopedists access to Campbell's in the library, the home, the office, or anywhere they have access to a PC.

The purpose of thisbook is to keep up with the rapid changes and advances in techniques,instrumentation, and, sometimes, principles in operativeorthopedics. The beneficiary of this publication would be orthopedicsurgeons and residents and other physicians who are involved intreating injuries and diseases of the musculoskeletal system. Thistext provides more comprehensive and detailed information on operativeorthopedics than any other published book. For many years, variouseditions of this book have served as a very important reference toorthopedic surgeons and residents in this country and all over theworld. This ninth edition, without any doubt, will maintain thetradition and should remain as the principal reference in everyorthopedic library.
