Although North and South Carolina have been home to many outstanding football players, those states did not host a professional football team until 1995 after NFL officials approved the creation of the Carolina Panthers. A chapter describes how the Panthers' first home stadium was Memorial Stadium at Greenville, South Carolina, prior to being based in Charlotte, North Carolina's current Bank of America Stadium. Coach Dom Capers guided the Panthers to seven victories during their first season. Significant wins, especially playoff games, are featured in this book's longest chapter which also chronicles the Panthers' loss to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVIII. Several early Panthers, including John Kasay and Wesley Walls, are profiled. Another section presents such twenty-first century Panthers as Julius Peppers and Steve Smith. The text notes interesting facts about players' pre-Panthers athletic endeavors such as Chris Weinke winning the Heisman trophy.
