About the Author

Else Holmelund Minarik first introduced readers to her timeless character in the classic Little Bear. Publication of this book, with illustrations by Maurice Sendak, launched the I Can Read series. This much-loved author continues to write stories for children at her home in North Carolina.

Fritz Siebel was born in Vienna and now lives in New York City with his family. He is well known for his pictures in Cat and Dog; David and the Giant; and Tell Me Some More . . . , all Harper I Can Read Books. Among the other books he has illustrated are A Fly Went By and Who Took the Farmer's Hat?

Reminiscent of the earlier Dick and Jane stories, this one about Cat and Dog has few words, repetition, and illustrations that support the text. Cat Admonishes Dog not to spill water, not to dig in the garden, and so on. Dog threatens Cat as he tells her to get off the bed, the chair, and the table. His comment about making "A cat pie out of you" is accompanied by one of the more humorous illustrations. In spite of their bickering, the two share bones in the yard and curl up together after they have been fed. The story has appeal and is part of the "My First I Can Read Book" series. The title is designed for shared reading--basic language, word repetition, and whimsical illustrations. 2005 (orig. 1960), HarperCollins, and Ages 4 to 6.

Children's Literature

K-Gr 1-Langdo has created colorful, cheerful new illustrations for Minarik's Cat and Dog, originally published in 1960. The text seems a bit dated as Dog threatens to make a catball, a catcoat, and a catpie out of the feline, and Cat cautions the pup against playing in water and roaming the garden, but finally the two pets happily dig up bones together until they are called in for dinner.
