New readers can learn all about cats in this beautifully photographed beginning reader. Four chapters cover a variety of basic information about cats, such as different types, distinctive body parts, and ways they survive in a variety of ecosystems. Following each chapter is a brief activity page to help readers understand and synthesize the information in that chapter. Photographs include common species like lions, tigers, and house cats, as well as less familiar ones, such as a sand cat, although most are not specifically identified. The book is designed for two readers—one experienced and one new—to read together. The left side (“you read”) contains a slightly longer and more complex paragraph, and the right side (“I read”) features one or two simpler sentences on the same topic. One word, in bold, is introduced on the left side, and then repeated on the right side, which may help new readers more easily acquire new vocabulary.
