Description: This is the latest edition of the classic guide to the practice of travel medicine from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It replaces the 2009 edition.
Purpose: With international travel is on the rise, this book is a useful resource for clinicians who might encounter questions from patients who will be travelling, either by chance or choice. The book has become an obligatory reference on travel medicine for physicians and other healthcare providers in the U.S.
Audience: The practice of travel medicine differs from other disciplines in medicine in that a wide spectrum of healthcare providers give advice to international travelers. It is remarkable the book is able to reach this broad audience without being either too complex or superficial. The authors, including contributors not associated directly with the CDC, are recognized authorities in the subject. However, the main contributors are practitioners in the U.S. and Canada.
Features: The book follows a logical path which reflects an encounter with a person traveling overseas, including counseling prior to travel, recommendations about self-treatable conditions, discussions of infectious and noninfectious problems faced by the traveler, and post-travel evaluation. The chapter dealing with selected destinations (introduced in the previous edition) has been expanded. Providers dealing with travelers with concerns about vaccination will find a section on fear of vaccines written by Dr. Paul Offit. The overall design of the book has been revamped, and it is a more pleasant read. The maps on yellow fever reflect the new recommendations regarding the emphasis on vaccine recommendations rather than risk description.
Assessment: Every healthcare provider in the U.S. involved in travel medicine must have the latest edition of this book or prompt access to the online version, which has up-to-date recommendations and corrections on typographical errors in the print version.
