The serious consequences of child abuse or maltreatment are among the most challenging things therapists encounter. Description: This installment in the Advances in Psychotherapy series focuses on the area of childhood maltreatment. This book reflects the latest in psychological interventions and is a terrific resource of information.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an evidence-based discussion of the key realities in working with children and adolescents suffering from maltreatment. Secondarily, the book strives to provide the necessary information and treatment interventions of most use to clinicians. The book exceeds the objectives set by the authors.
Audience: Specifically, mental health clinicians and trauma researchers will find this book of most value, but it would serve quite well as a supplement at the graduate level. The authors bring with them substantial expertise.
Features: The book provides an excellent overview of PTSD and the associated course and prognosis of childhood maltreatment. However, the chapter which outlines a considerable number of diagnostic disorders is truly remarkable. The book then focuses on the various empirically-based interventions for both children and parents such as CBT, coping skills training, gradual exposure, and psychoeducation. The case vignette helps facilitate understanding of the material and provides the real-world applicability.
Assessment: This is a concise yet powerful book that all trauma clinicians treating children and adolescents should have on their shelf.
