Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Michael Jung PhD

Children get a quick look at some fast facts about China in this early reader, which offers brief information blurbs about China's population, wildlife, modern daily life, food cuisine, educational practices, and holidays (although information about Chinese politics and government are curiously absent). Each section is illustrated by attractive photographs of famous geographic and man-made features such as the Yangtze River and Great Wall, as well as lesser-known aspects of China's wonders, like the red panda and snow leopard. Strangely, however, although the book is a "Level 5" book and intended for children "reading to learn," the text is surprisingly sparse and occasionally overshadowed by its accompanying photographs. Younger children may find it a good primer for very basic facts about China—older readers will be better served with a more information-rich book. Reviewer: Michael Jung, PhD
