Children's Literature - Debra Lampert-Rudman

Chiweenie: A Cross Between a Chihuahua and a Dachshund, is part of a new "Designer Dogs" series of picture books for children interested in learning more about cross-bred dogs. The opening chapter "Teeny Chiweenies" describes this breed's big heart, big attitude, and playful, easygoing nature. A definition of "designer dogs" as crossbreeds follows along with the information that they cannot be registered with the American Kennel Club. The book gives details of more popular crossbreeds including the "Labradoodle", a mix of Labrador Retriever and Poodle. Photos of a Labradoodle and a "Morkie" (Maltese and Yorkshire Terrier mix) highlight this chapter. The "Behind the Breed" chapter presents charming photos, brief histories and descriptions of each mixture's two parents' breeds, along with warnings about "puppy mills." The message presented in the "Designer Dogs" series is that breeders believe they are creating dogs that are easier to care for (most have little or no shedding) and are more easily trained than their parent breeds; however, grooming and training are very important for their care. A variety of health problems that occur in *both* of the original breeds are described. The chapter, "A Winning Combination," states that Chiweenies were "bred mainly for medical reasons." "Breeders wanted a dog with the personality of the Dachshund without the back problems...however; many Chiweenies still suffer from back problems." Chiweenies vary in appearance, but most have long, low backs and large expressive eyes, which in many dogs are two different colors. "Chiweenie Care" covers the breed's need for proper medical care, particular food, grooming, exercise and training. Parents and children can determine whether or not the Chiweenie is the right breed for their family by reading "Adopting a Chiweenie" and taking the five-question quiz (which includes the question: "Are you prepared to deal with the potential back problems of this dog?") Advice is also given about where to find Chiweenies and basic information about evaluating a dog's temperament when visiting a breeder. An eight-word "Glossary" repeats those words highlighted and defined in the text. The "Read More" section and "Internet Sites" paragraph offer opportunities for further study and research and may require assistance. Chiweenie is written in consultation with Tanya Dewey, PhD of the University of Michigan's Museum of Zoology.
