Description: This is the second edition of book that provides an overview of all major topics in ophthalmology. The sections are broken down by different anatomical areas of the eye, and further into disease entities. In addition, sections cover the ocular examination and optics as well. The first edition was published in 2000.
Purpose: It is intended as a quick pocket reference for students and physicians in the clinic and on the wards. This is a worthy objective given that there are very few pocket-sized references available in ophthalmology. Those that are available are geared towards the non-ophthalmologist and tend to be too simplistic. This book provides the necessary information needed for a quick reference for students/residents, as well as a review for practicing ophthalmologists.
Audience: The book is written for students, residents, practitioners (including, but not limited to, ophthalmologists), according to the author.
Features: Anatomy, examination techniques, essential imaging/testing, optics, and diagnosis and management of specific disease entities are all addressed. The illustrations are phenomenal and add tremendous value to the reading experience. They very clearly demonstrate what is written, with appropriate arrows/legends for clarification. The tables also provide organization to various important concepts, but are not overused as they are in some overview books. Readers should note that while this book provides a basic overview, it should not be used as a comprehensive board/test review.
Assessment: This is a great book to have in the clinic. It describes practical examination and diagnostic techniques. It breaks topics down into the basics so that users can quickly reference it without having to turn to large, unwieldy textbooks. The photos and drawings are excellent and illustrate common disease presentations, anatomy, surgical basics, examination techniques, and imaging/testing concepts in a very clear manner. Compared to other pocket references, this is the most comprehensive and best geared to the ophthalmic professional that I have seen.
