Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot

Emily Elizabeth is recounting the story of Clifford's birthday party which took place the previous week. At first she was concerned because no one showed up on time for the party. It turns out that they all felt that they did not have a gift that was good enough for their friend, but Emily tells them that whatever they have for Clifford will be good enough. So off they go to pick up their presents and head out for the party. There was a big ball from Scott and his dog Susie, but when Clifford blew it up and then let out the air it escaped into the sky. Then Lenny and his master Sam presented Clifford with a pinata. Clifford's attempts to break the pinata led to quite a bit of destruction. Jenny and her dog gave Clifford a sweater that was not even big enough to cover his nose. Then Clifford accidently smashed a toy dog and the gift from the Bow Wow Beauty Parlor was passed along to another friend. The cake arrived on the back of a flatbed truck and to Clifford's surprise it was not real but held all the members of his family. It was a wonderful way to really celebrate his birthday. The story is contemporary and the pictures a bit retro, but the cartoony look is in style so a new generation of readers will enjoy this book. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
