Purpose: According to the authors, the purpose is to provide concise and pragmatic ways of organizing the key issues that arise in psychiatric consultation to physically ill children and a template for clinical assessment and management. There is a need for practical and concise texts in this area and the book meets the authors' objectives.
Audience: This book is written primarily for practicing child psychiatrists, child psychiatry fellows, psychiatry residents, and pediatricians, although it could also be useful for other mental health professionals. The two authors appear to be highly credible authorities in the field.
Features: Chapters provide an overview of the field, including legal issues and assessment techniques. Also included are fairly comprehensive but succinct chapters on specific psychiatric disorders and common treatment issues in medically ill children, as well as a chapter devoted to psychopharmacological issues. Given the focused objectives of the book, much of the content could only be covered in a fundamental manner. However, this book would be useful as a quick reference for practitioners of any level.
