Coastal Hazards

Sponsored by the Turbulence Committee and the Fluids Committee of the Engineering Mechanics Institute of ASCE.

This collection contains 16 peer-reviewed papers selected from presentations at the ASCE Engineering Mechanics Conference, held in Los Angeles, California, August 8-11, 2010. Intensive development in the coastal zone has placed more people and property at risk. This proceedings examines the challenge of assessing and modeling coastal hazards and the application of these techniques to mitigating coastal threats. Practical and advanced research methodologies and technologies are introduced, including field measurements, laboratory analysis, and integrated numerical modeling.

Topics include:

  • wave forces in tsunamis
  • hurricane winds, storm surge, and wave-structure interaction assessment and modeling
  • trajectory simulation of oil and other pollutant spills
  • evaluation of river inflow and estuarine and coastal salinity
  • coastal flooding and erosion
Coastal engineers, researchers, and the coastal management community will find these papers a good reference in the field of worldwide coastal disaster assessment and mitigation.
