Colleen Browning (1918–2003) left her home in England in 1949 to become one of the few women working in the New York City world of realist painters. Her figurative works display the easy command of materials and media that became her hallmark. Eliasoph (visual & performing arts, Fairfield Univ.; Robert Vickrey: The Magic of Realism) describes her unbounded enthusiasm for the optimistic and open life of postwar New York. Browning was well aware of the work of her contemporaries, and one can see echoes in her art of Stanley Spencer, Salvador Dalí, and Edward Hopper. Her later works became more abstract and the imagery less defined. This catalog was produced for a traveling exhibition that began in Ireland and traveled to the United States. VERDICT The first monograph on this important woman painter is a much-needed addition to the history of realism in the second half of the 20th century.
