About the Author

Lewis Carroll was the pen-name of Charles Ludwidge Dodgson. Born in 1832, Dodgson was a mathematics tutor at Christ Church College, Oxford. In addition to his famous children's stories, his published work included poetry, puzzles, mathematical treaties, and essays on subjects as wide-ranging as tennis and the art of writing letters.

Sir John Tenniel was already a renowned cartoonist when he was invited to produce illustrations for Alice. His exquisite engravings are among the most iconic and best loved images in the world.

Philip Pullman is one of today's most highly aclaimed writers for children. Best known for the multi-award winning His Dark Materials trilogy, he lives and writes in Oxford, the city where Alice was created.

Alice collectors and fans should snatch up this weighty gift edition. While new editions of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There, both included here, are frequent, this title manages to bring something different to the table. The illustrations are the originals by Sir John Tenniel, but they are given the full color treatment—which is immensely appealing, especially to a young modern audience. There is a new foreword by Philip Pullman, where he shares his views on why Alice’s story has remained consistently popular for over 150 years. Also included is a deleted chapter, “The Wasp in a Wig,” and a preface from Lewis Carroll from 1897. Plus, three short notes from the author: “Christmas Greetings (From a Fairy to a Child)” written in 1867, “To All Child-readers of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” written in 1871, and “An Easter Greeting to Every Child Who Loves ‘Alice;” written in 1876. Macmillan, the original publisher of the “Alice in Wonderland” tales, has included 16 pages titled “The Story of Alice,” which tell the story of how Charles Dodgson was inspired to write Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. It also gives an account of the publishing history, how the story was received throughout time, and its impact today.
