Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Traci Avalos

Manners on the Playground provides an engaging and non-threatening way to approach the topic of proper behavior with young children. It gives excellent instruction about using good manners, and begins with sharing why it is important for kids to have good manners on the playground. Children will be able to make a connection with real life from the very first page! Readers will learn how to behave while participating in various activities, like sports and games, while on the playground and how to clean up after themselves. They will also learn procedures like waiting their turn, playing by the rules, and letting other children have a turn to go first. Universal manners like saying "please" and "excuse me" and assisting others are also mentioned. Readers are encouraged to demonstrate good sportsmanship so that everyone can have fun. The digitally created pictures are bright and inviting and use a variety of multiethnic children to demonstrate important manners. There is a "Fun Facts" page at the end that lists some differences in customs for children around the world. The last page includes an index and instructions for using FactHound, a website with links to approved sites that have been researched by the Capstone staff. This book is fully bilingual and includes complete text in both English and Spanish, and is a part of the "Way to Be!: Manners" series. Reviewer: Traci Avalos
