The book begins with an introduction explaining the importance of this connection, and then goes on to describe the early development of computer programming and operating systems, and then leads into the educational background required for different areas of programming. In all of these fields, access to confidential information makes it necessary to be prepared for facing difficult and complex situations. Numerous sidebars full of definitions, self-quizzes, inspirational quotations, and complementary information are scattered throughout as readers look at real-life tests of one's integrity and trustworthiness, respect and compassion, justice and fairness, responsibility, courage, self-discipline and diligence, and citizenship. The conversational, easy-to-read text is informative and uses natural dialogue to create realistic and challenging scenarios. Full-color photos complement the information or emphasize and help visualize the text. Careers with Character Computer Programmer emphasizes that character development is integral to building a successful career. The role of character in the workplace is described through a series of vignettes designed to illustrate decisions and choices that face computer programmers every day. The reader is invited to consider a moral problem presented to a computer programmer at work and reach a decision about the best course of action. The text presents either a “best” answer or asks the reader to consider what would be the most ethical plan of action. The character-testing dilemmas presented highlight issues of integrity and trustworthiness, respect and compassion, justice and fairness, responsibility, courage, self-discipline, diligence and citizenship. The closing chapter examines career opportunities for computer programmers. The text is illustrated with colorful photographs, words with corresponding definitions, interesting quotes and statements from documents such as the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics, presented in sidebars of contrasting color. Part of the “Careers with Character” series, the book ends with a list of books suggested for further reading, suggestions for internet based research, a glossary and an index.
