About the Author

Lucy Cousins is the creator of the beloved Maisy series. Join Maisy as she helps Mommy Hen locate all ten chicks on the farm. The front end page starts the search with Mommy Hen clucking as she begins to look. Search in different areas of the farm by lifting the flaps on different pages to look for the chicks. Open the stable door, and behind the flap is the first chick with the spotted horse. Lift another flap and there’s a chick in the flowerbed. At each location, the number of chicks found is printed and numerals are placed next to each chick. During the search for the tenth chick, Maisy, Mommy Hen, and her brood have to look in several places before they finally find the last chick. With all the chicks accounted for, the family can finally go to sleep in the coop. Children have opportunities to count the chicks and lift the flaps while looking for the babies. The back end page provides another chance to count all ten chicks and Mommy Hen. The illustrations are broadly outlined and colored in eye-catching, bright, bold hues, akin to the previous books featuring Maisy. PreS—In this lift-the-flap counting book, Mama Hen needs to find her 10 chicks before bedtime. With Maisy's help, they find all of them, one at a time, around the farm. Each one is hidden behind a flap with a friend. This adds the opportunity to point out the different animals and their sounds. As each chick is found, they join the search and are labeled with brightly colored numerals to help in the counting process. The story is simple, but flaps are always popular with preschoolers, and the colorful, boldly outlined illustrations highlight the numbers. Barnyard antics combine with flaps and basic counting skills in this, the latest of Maisy's adventures. With bedtime on the horizon, Mommy Hen enlists Maisy's aid in rounding up her widely scattered little flock. With a variety of shaped flaps, Maisy's search for each chick takes readers to different parts of the farm. From the pigsty to the apple tree, eventually nine of the errant fowl are accounted for. Finding the last and 10th, however, requires a bit more work (and quite a few more flaps) before the final chick returns to its family. As if starring in a reverse telling of the song "Five Little Ducks," Mommy Hen's ever increasing brood will provide a great deal of amusement for the toddler and preschooler set. As they are found one by one, they accompany Maisy while she searches around the farm, often riding on her head or tail and once, in a particularly surreal touch, even on an elephant. While the book hardly breaks new ground, the counting combined with the flaps, appealing barnyard animals and varied farm locations make this an ideal counting companion to better known stories and songs, such as "Old MacDonald."
