This is a good resource for librarians hoping to ensure their services are useful for library patrons with disabilities. Kowalsky and Woodruff cover the whole spectrum, including policy and procedure; setting up or remodeling facilities; staff training; maintaining daily operations; collaboration and outreach; developing a user-centered culture; and remaining current. Guidelines informing librarians about current terminology versus outdated and offensive descriptions are particularly valuable for avoiding unthinking speech. They offer a starter’s kit of possible programs and workshops and cite the need to have a variety of stakeholders involved throughout the processes the library undertakes. Kowalsky and Woodruff share some personal experiences and the book could use more. Real-life scenarios that other libraries and librarians have dealt with are a reward to interested and invested readers. The text’s general tone is somewhat textbook-ish; a more familiar touch or conversational style would have improved this already-invaluable resource on a very important topic. Several points are repeated, particularly two seemingly unconnected references to Rowan University’s “Light It Up Blue” autism awareness program, and the list of general tips for interacting with people with disabilities, which is cited twice in the book. Kowalsky (librarian, Rowan Univ., NJ) and Woodruff (director, Academic Success Ctr. & Disability Resources, Rowan Univ.) have constructed a guide for libraries to implement immediate and long-term strategies to address the needs of patrons with disabilities. From writing policies and training library staff to programming and outreach, the authors provide answers for a number of questions and challenges that may arise during the process. In addition, each chapter contains a list of resources for readers interested in investigating the topics further. Some may become overwhelmed by the amount of information within these pages, but this seems anticipated as the book features checklists to support the various topics, as well as examples of programming schedules. While the market is full of professional development literature for libraries, Kowalsky and Woodruff's contribution thoroughly addresses an underrepresented yet worthwhile topic. Demonstrated through their experiences and research, their expertise on the subject makes this work a valuable and credible resource.
