About the Author

The Reys were born in Hamburg, Germany. Hans Augusto Rey (1898-1977) met his wife-to-be, Margret (1906-1996), at a party in her father’s home in Germany; when he first caught a glimpse of her, she was sliding down the banister. In their twenties and thirties they lived in Paris and in Rio de Janeiro, where Hans sold bathtubs in villages along the Amazon River. Eventually Cambridge, Massachusetts, became the Reys’ home and community. Throughout their lives the Reys created many lively books together, including SPOTTY, PRETZEL, and lift-the-flap books such as HOW DO YOU GET THERE? The manuscript of the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and CURIOUS GEORGE was published in 1941. Their incorrigible little monkey has become an American icon, selling millions of books and capturing the hearts of readers everywhere. CURIOUS GEORGE has been published in many languages, including French, German, Japanese, Afrikaans, and Norwegian. Curious George is invited by his friends, the Renkinses, to a hoedown at their barn to celebrate the harvest. George and his friend Allie find out that a hoedown is a big party with hayrides and square dancing. Mr. Renkins tells them about bluegrass music and how it is so fast that it will make them want to dance a jig. The musicians, the Uptown Bluegrass Band, arrive in a bus; and George and Allie see all the instruments. They think the guitar looks like the most fun to play; and the guitarist, Jerry, tells them that anyone can make a guitar if they have the right parts. Their friend, the man with the yellow hat, say that he used to play the guitar; but he left it at home. Allie and George go get his guitar for him. It is dusty, so they wash it in the tub. When they see it is ruined, George decides to make a new guitar. They collect an assortment of found objects to make one; and when it’s finished, they show it to the man with the yellow hat. Jerry thinks it’s great because bluegrass music has a tradition of using found objects like washboards and spoons. They all dance and sing at the hoedown, and George and Allie get to play the washboard and spoons. A page on “Make a String Instrument” explains how to make a bluegrass instrument from such things as empty containers and rubber bands. This book is part of the “Curious George” series and is based on a television series teleplay. A website that features other games and activities designed to help reinforce simple math, science, and engineering concepts is listed. The cartoon illustrations are colorful and entertaining.
