Description: This is the 12th edition of a renowned textbook of practical hematology. Although this edition indicates there is an accompanying website, I was unable to access it. After entering the PIN and ISBN numbers, I got the message, "Thank you for your Elsevier eBook purchase. This title does not include any additional online-only materials." This was a hard stop; there was no way to access the website.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive reference for laboratory hematology, recognizing the tight intertwining of clinical and laboratory hematology. These are very worthy objectives well met by this edition.
Audience: The intended audience is clinical laboratory scientists, and laboratory or clinical hematologists. The book would be very useful to any of these groups whether in training or practice. It would also be of interest to any other medical professional interested in hematology. The editors and authors are very credible authorities.
Features: This edition continues the recognized excellence of this book. The authors are British, and this book has a significant British influence. The British Committee for Standards in Haematology is heavily referenced for evidence-based guidelines and standards. True to the philosophy of the tight interrelationship of laboratory and clinical hematology, this book covers what we in the U.S. would refer to as hematology, blood banking/transfusion, immunophenotyping (flow cytometry), and laboratory management (including quality systems). I loved the last chapter, "Haematology in under-resourced laboratories," especially the recognition that these laboratories are not limited to known resource-limited geographical regions. As for the remainder of this 570-page book — what can I say except gush with enthusiasm? This edition continues to provide a strong foundation for laboratory and clinical hematology, albeit with a British perspective.
Assessment: This is an excellent book for new learners or for experienced practitioners wanting an update/refresher. If you want a basic book covering all aspects of laboratory and clinical hematology, this is the one for you. If you are a student, this is a must have.
