About the Author

Tim Warnes and Jane Chapman live in rural southwest England and share a studio at home with views of open countryside. Mommy Mine is their first collaborative book project since their marriage ten years ago. Tim says, "It was fun playing with words and finding combinations to bounce off each other. Hopefully we've come up with something that's fun to read out loud." Jane, the best-selling illustrator of Bear Snores On and Bear Wants More by Karma Wilson, enjoyed painting a few of the more obscure animals as well as old children's-book favorites.

Beautifully illustrated baby animals experience a wide array of emotions as they bond with their dads. The daddy snails are slimy, the snakes are long, the turtles are slow, and the raccoons are sneaky. Each animal's characteristic is described with a simple term that, when read aloud, creates an appealing rhythmic flow. There are two words per page and the print is large. The colorful illustrations give all of the animals a warm and friendly appearance. Despite all of their unique animal qualities, the daddies in this book all have one thing in common, and that is the tender hugs that they share with their children. Young children will certainly enjoy this book and may even request that it be read over and over. The author and illustrator are a husband and wife team. PreS-Gr 1- In a jolly, rhyming text, this book describes various animal fathers, from a ponderous walrus ("Daddy/GIANT/Daddy/jiggle") to a soft-fleeced ram ("Bouncy/Daddy/happy/giggle"). Other critters include hummingbirds ("Daddy/busy"), gorillas ("Daddy/strong"), snails ("Daddy/slimy"), and snakes ("Daddy/long"). The vibrant, painterly illustrations, featuring fathers interacting with their offspring, are filled with action and color. Two spreads must be turned vertically for viewing, adding interest to the layout. The use of white backgrounds keeps the images large and clear. This husband-and-wife team's addition to the daddy-adoration genre comes out just in time for his big day. An adorable but realistically portrayed cast of animals parades through the pages, daddies with their offspring. One by one, compact rhyming couplets describe the various dads: "Daddy busy / Daddy strong / Daddy slimy / Daddy long." These pages depict hummingbirds, gorillas, snails and snakes, respectively, each interacting with his children. Many of the adjectives and verbs appear in delightfully descriptive fonts-"fluffy" sprouts soft-looking feathers, while "dirty" shakes off clumps of mud. The gentle rhyme sets the tone for bedtime, and the final spread is the perfect segue to sleep, with a group of daddies hugging their children close. As always, Chapman's illustrations define the mood and tone for the text. Her animal families are warm and loving, with expressive faces, and she keeps their interactions and activities natural. A cuddly tribute to all the things that make a dad, Dad...and not a bad way to reinforce a child's concept of adjectives and verbs, either. (Picture book. 3-5)
