Children's Literature - Laura Backman

Daddy Long-Leg spiders are fascinating to many children. These arachnids have legs that can be 25 times longer than their bodies. They trap their enemies in tangled silk and can break off a leg to escape from a predator. This title invites children explore the world of daddy long-leg spiders including its habitat, diet, characteristics, and life cycle. Full-page photos provide close-ups, some in nice detail. A variety of photos have labels to help children identify specific features. Single paragraphs in a large, clear font help beginning and developing readers absorb facts about this arachnid. Diagrams and interesting facts can be found on relevant pages. The table of contents contains chapter titles that will hook readers and entice them to explore the pages within. This volume, part of the "First Facts" series, uses minimal scientific terms. This series would be useful in a life sciences curriculum and a good addition to elementary classrooms and libraries. Bolded vocabulary is defined at the bottom of the page and in the glossary at the back. This hard-cover title is suited for primary level instruction, but can be useful to younger children as well since daddy long-legs are easily recognized by youngsters and may be their first introduction to spiders. Educators will find the controlled vocabulary and comprehension features beneficial for students beginning independent research. Readers are presented with concise information and a strong introduction to Daddy Long-legs. Reviewer: Laura Backman
