On July 4, 1776 the members of the Continental Congress formally signed the Declaration of Independence thus severing ties with Great Britain. This is a well-known fact but one that many Americans take for granted. In fact, as Rebecca Rissman reveals in this illustrated volume in the "Foundations of Our Nation" series, the events leading up to the eventual signing of this historic document did not inevitably lead to that result. In The Declaration of Independence readers are taken on a journey back to the colonial era with an eye toward tracing the steps that led to the American Revolution. In sequence Rissman describes the series of unfortunate events that frayed and then broke the ties that bound colonists to their mother country. Issues such as the effects of the Stamp Act, early combat at Lexington and Concord, and the full out assault at Bunker Hill, all were stepping stones leading to the Revolution. Even weeks before the signing of the Declaration of Independence efforts were afoot to attempt reconciliation with King George III. However, all such peace initiatives proved unsuccessful and Thomas Jefferson's work was the straw that broke the camel's back of unity between the Thirteen Colonies and England. Written in a way that causes students to learn not only facts but also to reflect on the content, this is a fine little book that fits well into the new common core approaches to teaching and learning.
