About the Author

Mayra Perez, MD is Chief Resident at Methodist Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program in Houston, Texas. She received her medical degree from The University of Texas Health Science Center-Houston Medical School. She has worked for Baylor's Chonic Disease Control and Prevention Center, and has volunteered in a number of capacities including health screening for Mexican Immigrants, and Spanish interpreting for patients.

Winston Liaw, MD is Academic Chief Resident in the Family Medicine Residency Program at the Virginia Commonwealth University, Fairfax, Virginia. He received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine and an MPH from Harvard School of Public Health.

Lindsay Kathryn Botsford, MD is Chief Resident at the Kelsey-Seybold Family Medicine Residency Program at Baylor College of Medicine. She also received her medical degree at Baylor and has a BA in Health Policy from Rice University.

Description: This is an excellent review of commonly encountered illnesses in an outpatient clinic for all family medicine students, residents, and faculty.
Purpose: The intent is to help students excel on the family medicine clerkship and the USMLE Step 2 CK.
Audience: With its simple, easy-to-understand explanations of disease processes, this book is designed primarily for students rotating in family medicine, but it also is useful for residents and faculty.
Features: It covers all the commonly encountered clinical scenarios in family medicine from diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia to obstetric and gynecological care. It uses a very simple question-answer format that not only gives precise information but also prepares clinicians to explain disease process to patients. The chapter on hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and other diseases of the thyroid made confusing concepts easy to understand. The book could be improved by the addition of color schematic diagrams.
Assessment: This review successfully combines the physiology, pathology, and clinical course of a disease and covers all key clinical topics to pass the family medicine clerkship. It is highly recommended for every student to read before, during, and after the family medicine rotation to become better doctors as well as to pass the shelf! Clinical vignettes are extremely helpful reviews for commonly encountered illnesses.
