About the Author

Charlie Hailey teaches design/build, history, and theory at the University of Florida, where he received his doctorate. A licensed architect and a Fulbright Scholar, he also studied at Princeton University and UT-Austin and has worked with the designer-builders Jersey Devil. His previous books include Campsite (LSU Press, 2008), Camps (MIT Press, 2009), and Spoil Island (Rowman & Littlefield, 2013).

The lines between designer and builder are blurred in this title. Hailey (architecture, Univ. of Florida) pulls from a collection of case studies to present examples of collaborative building projects. In this book, part of an academic series, Hailey recounts the instructional philosophy of a group of progressive educators called Jersey Devil. Chapters cover tools, the process, and lessons learnt via the process. It is one thing to design; it is another to go through construction with an adaptable design, influenced by various factors resulting in a more successful product. The author is clearly enthusiastic about the synergy created by the cooperative nature of these builds. However, both the small text and illustrations are consistent with this series. Little can be learned from the images and there are no steps through any construction. VERDICT This will be of interest to architecture students and professionals looking for alternative methodology.
