There are only two tests of a life well lived L. Ron Hubbard once remarked: Did one do as one intended? And were people glad one lived?  Of what must a science of mind be composed?

1. An answer to the goal of thought.

2. A single source of all insanities, psychoses, neuroses,

compulsions, repressions and social derangements.

3. Invariant scientific evidence as to the basic nature and

functional background of the human mind.

4. Techniques (the art of application) by which the discovered

single source could be invariably cured, ruling out, of course,

the insanities of malformed, deleted or pathologically

injured brains or nervous systems and, particularly,

iatrogenic psychoses (those caused by doctors and involving

the destruction of the living brain itself).

5. Methods of prevention of mental derangement.

6. The cause and cure of all psychosomatic ills, which number,

some say, 70 percent of Man’s listed ailments.

Such a science would exceed the severest terms previously laid

down for it in any age, but any computation on the subject should

discover that a science of mind ought to be able to be and do just

these things.

A science of the mind, if it were truly worthy of that name, would

have to rank in experimental precision with physics and chemistry.

There could be no “special cases” to its laws. There could be no

recourse to Authority. The atom bomb bursts whether Einstein

gives it permission or not. Laws native to Nature regulate the

bursting of that bomb. Technicians, applying techniques derived

from discovered natural laws, can make one or a million atom bombs

all alike.

After the body of axioms and technique was organized and

working as a science of mind, in rank with the physical sciences,

it would be found to have points of agreement with almost every

school of thought about thought which had ever existed. This is

again a virtue and not a fault.

Simple though it is, Dianetics does and is these things:

1. It is an organized science of thought built on definite

axioms: statements of natural laws on the order of those

of the physical sciences.

2. It contains a therapeutic technique with which can

be treated all inorganic mental ills and all organic

psychosomatic ills, with assurance of complete cure in

unselected cases.

3. It produces a condition of ability and rationality for Man

well in advance of the current norm, enhancing rather

than destroying his vigor and personality.

4. Dianetics gives a complete insight into the full potentialities

of the mind, discovering them to be well in excess of past

supposition.

5. The basic nature of Man is discovered in Dianetics, rather

than hazarded or postulated, since that basic nature can

be brought into action in any individual completely. And

that basic nature is discovered to be good.

6. The single source of mental derangement is discovered

and demonstrated on a clinical or laboratory basis by

Dianetics.

7. The extent, storage capacity and recallability of the human

memory is finally established by Dianetics.

8. The full recording abilities of the mind are discovered by

Dianetics with the conclusion that they are quite dissimilar

to former suppositions.

9. Dianetics brings forth the non-germ theory of disease,

complementing biochemistry and Pasteur’s work on the

germ theory to embrace the field.

10. With Dianetics ends the “necessity” of destroying the

brain by shock or surgery to effect “tractability” in mental

patients and “adjust” them.

11. A workable explanation of the physiological effects of

drugs and endocrine substances exists in Dianetics and

many problems posed by endocrinology are answered.

12. Various educational, sociological, political, military and

other human studies are enhanced by Dianetics.

13. The field of cytology is aided by Dianetics, as well as other

fields of research.

            “We have around us today many problems: problems of the criminal, war, individual illness and juvenile delinquency.   We are faced with very intimate and vital problems which we are not, as a large society, adequately solving. Dianetics has introduced into the society a technique by which it is possible to increase the potential working groups in the country.

            “I would like to tell you a little more about Dianetics, its general ability to remedy some of the troubles and problems with which the community, the individual, the nation are faced.   We have quite a few things in this society today which need remedying, and we are in a little bit better position to remedy these things.

                A hidden part of the human mind is at the root of our problems of stress, unhappiness, self-doubt and paralyzing anxiety, said the author of Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health.

Author L. Ron Hubbard said past painful experiences are stored as memories just below the level of conscious thought in what he called the “reactive mind,” where they can be triggered in the present to work destructively against you. It works like this: through years of research on hundreds of cases, Hubbard discovered two parts to the human mind. First there is the analytical mind, the mind that rationalizes, calculates, dreams, solves and creates. This is the part of the mind that we want to be working at 100% capacity, 100% of the time. What hinders achieving this 100% level of operation is called the reactive mind.

The reactive mind is the subconscious part of our mind that acts without our permission. It takes control on a stimulus-response basis, acting as a self-defense mechanism gone awry. The reactive mind thinks in identities, that is to say it cannot differentiate between a current situation and a past painful experience. It collapses the two, giving us commands to operate off of that have little or no basis in current reality.

The analytical mind goes through existence recording diligently until something happens that causes the reactive mind to take over. The cause could be an accident, heavy drowsiness, emotional shock or many other combinations of painful experiences. Suddenly the reactive mind begins recording everything that is occurring around you during the painful incident: all sounds, scents, sights and feelings.

Later in life, when you encounter a situation similar to the original recording made, the reactive mind once again takes over and begins to feed you data about how to act and respond -- based on information from a totally different incident in the past!

In the opening pages of Dianetics, L. Ron Hubbard wrote, “Dianetics is no solemn adventure. For all that it has to do with suffering and loss, its end is always laughter, so foolish, so misinterpreted were the things which caused the woe.”

Herein lies the crux of Dianetics’ success. DIANETICS COULD BE ANSWER TO STRESS

Chronically stressed children are far more likely to have asthma attacks than less-stressed children, experts have found.   Researchers followed a group of 90 asthma child patients in Glasgow, Scotland aged between six and 13-years old for 18 months, noting when they had attacks, and finding out about the stressful events in their lives.

The study, carried out by the University of Helsinki in Finland, was published in the Lancet Medical Journal and also found that even the children of excessively anxious parents have been found to be more likely to develop asthma.

More than 5 million children in America suffer from asthma, the most prevalent chronic condition in children.   The estimated annual cost of treating asthma in children under 18 years of age is $3.2 billion.

Asthma attacks can be very frightening for children.  “It’s the scariest thing, not being able to breathe, said Kaye Conley, who suffered severe asthma attacks as a child.   She was covered in eczema and an acute asthmatic from the age of three.  “It’s terrifying when you can’t breathe,” said Kaye.  “You know once you stop breathing, you’re gone.”

It  has long been suspected that kids with asthma may be exposed to more things in their environment that set off their asthma than they are aware of.  It could be emotional stress or just something in the environment that triggers an old memory of a painful incident.

Emotional Link

Some organs of the body – the skin, lungs and stomach, heart, glands and intestines, are especially sensitive to changes in the emotions.   You’ve probably experienced your heart beating fast when you get anxious.   Emotional upsets or memories of painful incidents can affect these organs and create physical symptoms.

Handling the stress and emotion

          “My parents were constantly looking for something that would alleviate my asthma attacks,” said Kaye.  “We tried every possible treatment known – with no result.”  The doctors assigned the attacks to stress caused by her school-work so although she was a good student, Kaye left school at 15.

          Her mother was convinced that there had to be an underlying cause to the condition.   She felt strongly that if a child had a good home, was loved and well cared for, she should not have constant health problems – as Kaye did.

          When Kaye was 19 her mother was introduced to Dianetics and felt she had finally found the answer. “The mechanism by which the mind is able to cause a physical disability, predispose the body to an illness or perpetuate sickness, is a simple thing,” says Hubbard.   Mrs. Conley arranged for Kaye to have some Dianetics counseling right away.

          “It was an amazing experience,” said Kaye.  “I went back into my past and we found the incident that was causing the asthma and the eczema.  I experienced all those emotions of terror – the feeling of being slowly closed in, not being able to breathe and knowing I was going to die.  We  worked through the incident and it all went away. – for good!”

          “I wish I could have had Dianetics when I was much younger,” says Kaye.   “Once I had that counseling session it was all gone.”

          It was a tremendous relief to Kaye to be able to live a normal life and not have that fear in the back of her mind all the time.   For months she still carried her inhaler, “just in case” the attacks would start again.

TOOLS FOR COPING WITH STRESS

Whether based on our job, our relationship with others or on world events that threaten our lives, stress is a fact of life in the modern world.  Stress can result from exposure to shocking events or painful emotions.  As a result, stress may also be accompanied by illogical fears and irrational behavior.

One well-known self-help author says that the foundations of stress can be found in what he has called the reactive mind.   According to author L. Ron Hubbard, the reactive mind is the portion of a person’s mind which works on a totally stimulus-response basis.   It is not under his control and can exert power over his awareness, purposes, thoughts, body and actions.

In his popular book, Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health, Hubbard explains that there is something effective available to help people deal with stress.   Dianetics describes just how the reactive or subconscious part of the mind can overwhelm the analytical mind – and why this causes stress.   This mechanism in the mind managed to bury itself from view so thoroughly that only many years of exact research and careful testing uncovered it.

“This is the mind which makes a man suppress his hopes, which holds his apathies, which gives him irresolution when he should act and kills him before he has begun to live,” writes Hubbard on Dianetics.

IS THERE A REAL SOLUTION TO DEPRESSION?

          Depression is now ranked as a major global health crisis, affecting over 120 million people, according to a recent study from the World Health Organization (WHO), and ranks fourth amongst all health problems in its economic and social costs.

          The study, published in the journal of the American Medical Association recently, also estimated that ten percent of the population in the United States suffers from depression, and between 15 and 20 percent of sufferers commit suicide.

          The symptoms of depression include feeling sad or down, losing interest in everyday activities, feeling guilty, worthless or hopeless, or having sleeplessness and lack of energy.   This means that practically every person on this planet suffers at one point or another from depression and according to the National Institute of Health (Bethesda, Maryland), 19 million Americans older than 18 are afflicted with depression in any given year.

          Despite the remedies from the leaders in the medical field which consist generally of various pills - that are about as effective as the age-old, "just take a deep breath" method - there is an actual solution to depression and it has been around for 54 years.  The remedy is described in the book, Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health by author and humanitarian, L. Ron Hubbard.

          Depression is often characterized as both a "disease" and a "medical condition."   This means that if your favorite pet dies and you feel sad about it and that sadness lingers for a few weeks or more and upsets your daily life, you may somehow have contracted a disease, or medical condition.   Only a doctor or other "qualified" healthcare professional can make a diagnosis of depression.

          This is in contrast to the remedy Hubbard describes in Dianetics, which has been used successfully by millions of people worldwide.   Harvard University psychiatrist Joseph Glenmullen says the questionnaire or symptoms used to "diagnose" depression "may look scientific," but "when one examines the questions asked and the scales used, they are utterly subjective measures...."

          Allen J. Frances, professor of psychiatry at Duke University Medical Center writes, "psychiatry's claim that mental illnesses are brain diseases...is not true.  There are no objective diagnostic tests to confirm or disconfirm the diagnosis of depression... There is no blood or other biological test to ascertain the presence or absence of a mental illness, as there is for most bodily diseases."

          While biochemical explanations for psychiatric conditions are the most common explanation of the cause of depression, Glenmullen is emphatic, "...not one has been proved.  Quite on the contrary, in every instance where such an imbalance was thought to have been found, it was later proven false."

          According to biopsychologist, Elliot S. Valenstein, PhD, author of Blaming the Brain, "the theories are held on to not only because there is nothing else to take their place, but also because they are useful in promoting drug treatment.

          There are three main treatments for depression symptoms as advocated by mental health practitioners: anti-depressant drugs, electro-compulsive treatment and psychotherapy.

          Nobody knows exactly what the anti-depressant drugs (SSRI's) do to the brain, and while they temporarily handle some of the symptoms of depression, their side-effects are quite drastic.

          As regards electro-compulsive treatment (ECT), a 2001 Columbia University study found ECT is so ineffective at ridding patients of their depression that nearly all of those who receive it relapse within six months of stopping treatment.

          Lastly, psychotherapy can take years at great cost, and has no objective documentation as to its efficacy.

          As with any condition, treating only the symptoms, not the cause, has no real long-term benefits.  With current mainstream treatments, it seems therefore that no safe effective therapy exists.

          However it is not true that there is no understanding of the causes of depression.   In his book Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health, Hubbard lays out very clearly the exact anatomy of how the mind works, and what causes such things as anxiety, irrational fears and depression.   Dianetics fully explains the source of upsets and uncontrolled emotion -- the reactive mind and details how it is possible to get rid of it.

          Current medical thinking treats physical illnesses as only a function of the body, while modern psychiatry treats mental illnesses as a dysfunction of the brain.  In Dianetics, Hubbard demonstrates how the mind affects the body, he shows how 70% of all man's illness are in fact psychosomatic and then he goes on to explain the exact therapy to deal with these problems.

          Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health, was first published in 1950 and has been a consistent best-seller ever since.  The information contained in this book can help any person achieve a happier and healthier life, and does not involve any of the expensive and often destructive therapies used to treat the symptoms of depression.   Dianetics counseling goes straight to the root of the problem - the reactive mind - and helps to handle it, thus alleviating the symptoms.

WHY MOM IS SO IMPORTANT                                                                      
KEEPING THE KIDS SAFE AND MENTALLY HEALTHY

          In the charge of woman is the care of the person of the human being and his children," wrote philosopher and author L. Ron Hubbard in his best selling book Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health.

          As we send cards, gifts and flowers to Mom this week we should take a moment to reflect on the important role she plays in a family.

          "It is not, then, any wild utopian thought that woman can be placed above the level hitherto occupied," wrote Hubbard.  "And so she must be placed if the childhood of tomorrow's generation is to reach any high standard, if homes are to be peaceful and unharassed and if society is to advance."

          Kids constantly fall and bump themselves.   They get sick.   They have fights with friends that upset them.   Accidents, nearly all preventable, are the leading cause of death in children.  And if words are said while they are not fully aware and in pain, it can have severe effects later in life.

          Hubbard's research uncovered what really goes on in the hidden "reactive" part of our minds and how this affects our lives.  It is here that we carefully store all the unpleasant, painful and  upsetting experiences of our past.   He also discovered why these experiences influence us in the future and cause stress, anxiety, and unhappiness.

          All that has to happen to activate this part of the mind is physical or emotional pain and a lessening of our awareness.  When this happens, all activity and any words spoken get recorded by the reactive mind and they can have command value in the future - in the same way that the commands of a hypnotist can make people do strange things after he has woken them up.

          These occurrences subtly weave their way from incident to incident causing your life to follow the patterns set up in your reactive mind.

          How vital then that another be aware of these things and protect her children from reactive commands when they are hurt?  Preventing accidents and painful incidents is the first step.   You can influence and protect your child by focusing on the seven common sources of accidental injury and death: falls, motor vehicle accidents, drowning, poisoning, burns and fires, choking and firearms.

          Preventing an accident or injury from having any detrimental content is the next step.  Be aware that any words spoken while a child is ill or injured can have an effect later.  When kids are in pain keep the area silent.  "Say nothing around a sick child or an injured child," says Hubbard.   "Smile, appear calm, but say nothing."

          "It is a remarkable fact, a scientific fact, that the healthiest children come from the happiest mothers."  The book Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health may be the best present you could give your wife or mother this Mother's Day.

          "Woman, you have a right and a reason to demand good treatment," wrote Hubbard.

TREATING CHRONIC PAIN

          Science has explored a number of ways to help people deal with pain.  Some developments - such as those involving drugs or physical therapy - may be the type of treatments most people would expect.   Others, however, may surprise you.

          For example, in 1997 Elvis Winterbottom was accidentally shot in the hip with a .45 caliber gun.   After surgery, he was released from the hospital in a wheelchair, unable to walk.   Recovery was slow and the pain was intense - to the point where simple actions such as taking a shower were difficult for him.

          Winterbottom was a chronic pain sufferer.   Chronic pain is a condition that affects an estimated 86 million people in the US.   It's defined as pain that continues for a month or more beyond the usual recovery period for an injury, or pain that goes on for months or years as a result of a chronic condition.

          Winterbottom experienced pain for years, until he attended a career seminar that did more than help his job outlook.   While at a lecture on success in the acting industry, Winterbottom learned about a course on the book Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health.   He signed up immediately. 

          During the course he received Dianetics Therapy - a technique developed by L. Ron Hubbard in which one looks at incidents in the past that may be causing physical and emotional pain in the present.

          Hubbard said there are two parts of the mind: the analytical and the reactive.   The analytical mind records mental images and pictures, except for in times of extreme mental or physical pain, at which point memory is stored in the reactive section.

          Hubbard maintained the reason people experience chronic emotional or physical pain is that the memories of their injuring events are "locked up" in their reactive minds.

          "I spoke about the shooting and went through the incident with my counselor," says Winterbottom.  "I came home and told my wife about it, but didn't think it was that big of a deal."   The next morning, Winterbottom and his wife set out to do their weekly shopping - a chore which Winterbottom generally needed an ample supply of pain killers to perform.  "After an hour my wife said to me, 'slow down,'" says Winterbottom. "Then it hit me: I have no pain.   I am not limping.   I have no pain!"

          The next day he put his hip to the test.   Winterbottom climbed the longest set of stairs in the world at Universal Studios - twice - and still, no pain.   Today, Winterbottom's hip is completely pain-free.

          "It's a miracle to me," he says.  "That course gave me my life back."

FAMILY FINDS HOPE WITH DIANETICS

          Families with handicapped children have new hope for solving the problems of emotional stress and strain that come to a family following the birth of a handicapped child.

          Los Angeles parents Shirley and Steve Young say they found the solution to raising a handicapped son in the book “Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health.”

          “Our son was born with deformity of his lower limbs,” says Shirley.  “It was necessary for the doctors to amputate both legs just below the knees so that Eric could later be fitted with artificial limbs that would give him a chance for a normal life.”

          Their son’s condition proved a shock to both mother and father.

          “Eric was our first child,” she says.   “I think every mother faces the fear that her child may be born with a handicap, but you think it will never happen to you.”

          “When it does it puts enormous stress on the family.  Corrective surgery is very costly.  You have to see that your child gets the special attention that he needs, not only professional attention, but additional caring from the parents,” she says.

          The couple’s relationship as husband and wife also suffered for a while, says Shirley and Steve.

          “We would find ourselves arguing with one another about what was the best thing to do for Eric,” says Steve.   “Everyone says they have the answer, but they all tell you that  your baby will never really grow up to be a normal, well adjusted child because of his handicap.    When you hear that, it hurts you as a parent.”

          Both parents, however, refused to accept what they called “a lot of misinformation about children and about the mind.”

          “We had both read the book ‘Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health’ and we knew that a person’s physical condition did not in any way influence his mental condition,” says Mrs. Young.  “It is quite the other way around.”

          Throughout the time her son was being fitted with artificial limbs, the couple applied Dianetics technology both to the baby and to themselves as a family.

          “It made our relationship with one another even stronger.  It helped us raise our son so that he was free from all the false considerations that counselors and psychologists try to force on handicapped children and their parents.”

          As a result, Eric is happy, healthy, well adjusted boy today.    He runs, swims and plays baseball.

          “He even climbs trees,” says his somewhat chagrined mother.   “I have the same worries that any mother has over a rambunctious six year old.”

          “Dianetics was really the solution,” she says.  “I tell any mother with a handicapped child to read the book.  It opens the door to solving all the problems that psychologists don’t have answers for.”
