Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Susan Borges

This excellent text, which is part of an excellent series called "Library Smarts," has arrived at the perfect time for our youngest readers. With the huge influx of digital texts and e-readers, children are reading fewer books and conducting research differently because of all the information which is so easily available to them. This well-written and important text will help our youngest students understand what research is and the importance of asking a good question which can be researched. This book will also help young students learn about a variety of ways that they can collect information to answer their questions. Each section of this simple nonfiction text is outlined in the table of contents and clearly labeled on each page. On every page of the text there is a clearly stated message and an excellent up-close photograph which helps explain how a young student works independently or with a librarian to do research using books, magazines, or computers. There is a glossary at the back of the book as well as an index which includes the key elements of the text including questions, gathering information, library and other resources, and sharing what you learned. This text is a very good resource for young students because they do not always understand the importance of doing research and/or the importance of thinking deeply about a focused question which they want answered. Public libraries and elementary school libraries will definitely want a copy of this important book in their collection. Additionally, this book will help support the common core standards in elementary schools across the country. Reviewer: Susan Borges

K-Gr 3—In this uneven set, there are no more than 11 sentences per page, which are placed opposite full-page photographs and graphics. Glossary words are highlighted in blue and defined in the back matter. For their usability and time liness, Research, Parts of a Book, and Online are the standouts. Research tells students that, "Research is about asking questions. What do you want to know?" This volume would be a great resource for a classroom unit. Parts of a Book introduces students to nonfiction book elements, from the table of contents to the index. Online covers Internet passwords, cyberbullying, and more. The rest of the titles can be repetitive and sometimes bland. The images, by and large, are clear and colorful and correspond to the texts. Educators should buy individual volumes as needed.
