Editorial Reviews

Library Journal

Thirteen-year-old Franklin Robertson is gay, fat, and obsessed with classic horror movies. Coming of age in the mid-1980s in the suburbs of Washington, DC, he is tormented and misunderstood, both at school and at home. To cope, he focuses his energy on writing and becomes devoted to a late-night horror movie show hosted by the eerie Doctor Cerberus. Tragic, but never far from a laugh, this production mixes the real-life horror of dysfunctional suburban family life and the caustic challenges of an ostracized young adulthood with a good dose of irony, punning, and self-mockery. Aguirre-Sacasa's charming script is enhanced by the cast's performances; actors Steven Culp, Pamela Gray, Simon Helberg, Jamison Jones, and Jarrett Sleeper each shine at one point or another with great lines and inflective moments of truth. Strongly recommended for anyone enjoying live audio productions, coming-of-age tales, suburban family dramas, and classic horror movies.—Lance Eaton, Peabody, MA
