Utilizing commentary in conjunction with rarely seen black-and-white archival film provided by the Zane Grey estate, this Michael Fowlkes video documents Zane Grey's quest through the South Pacific aboard the Alma G to become the first man to ever land a thousand-pound billfish using a rod and reel. Besides being one of the 20th century's most prolific and popular Western novelists, Zane Grey was also an adventuresome, world-renowned sport fisherman. His passion for big-game fishing led him to pioneer the development of heavy-duty reels capable of hauling in ever-larger, record-breaking deep-sea fish. He also helped design and produce big-fish drag systems, teasers, and double line leaders. The program features scenes of Grey fighting giant blacks and blues, sailfish, yellowfin tuna, and steelhead.
