With incisive scholarship and fascinating archival footage, the documentary Architecture of Doom traces the aesthetics of Nazism from the movement's birth in the 1920s to the death of Hitler in World World II. The film makes a convincing argument that Nazism was born as an aesthetic ideology from the fertile but demented minds of failed artist Adolf Hitler and his followers, men such as architect Albert Speer and would-be novelist Josef Goebbels. Abhorring modern art, they banned the work of Picasso and the great German Expressionist artists as "degenerate." Writer-director Peter Cohen illustrates the development of Nazi art -- a perverted form of neoclassicism heavily influenced by the work of composer Richard Wagner, with its emphasis on the cult of Nordic legacy and the myth of pure Arayan blood. The film's extraordinary collection of images -- from Hitler's early sketches of Nazi uniforms to architectural plans for buildings that he believed would rival the grandeur of ancient Greek and Roman structures. Sam Gray's narration is restrained, allowing the footage to speak for itself. It does, with frightening eloquence.
