Think of this three-CD set of Matador Records "hits" as a BIG CHILL for the indie generation. Over the course of the last ten years, the New York label has given college-rock scholars wonderful records by waves of astounding bands -- Pavement, Yo La Tengo, Liz Phair, Cat Power, Helium, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and Guided by Voices, among others -- while expanding indie-rock's sonic palette with electronica imported from England's trailblazing Warp label. With a couple of exceptions (most notably, Belle and Sebastian) the gang's all here, from the guitar-poetry of Pavement and Yo La Tengo and the Japanimated pop of Cornelius and Pizzicato Five to the abstract beat-science of Red Snapper and the labels first hip-hop signing, the Arsonists. It's a pretty remarkable set, especially when non-Matador rockers like Sleater-Kinney (which records for the label in Europe) stop by to contribute ringer cuts like their "Banned From the End of the World." Highly recommended.
