The touch of Oscar Peterson is pure perfection on the fifteen minute "Salute To Bach" which opens up this DVD recorded in Berlin at the Philharmonic on June 2, 1985. The audio is clear bringing Neils-Henning Oersted Pedersen's bass and Martin Drew's drumming into the mix where all three instruments have no problem cutting through. It's pure unison as the tempo picks up and subsides while lovely shots of both the pianist and bassist's respective hands are in the camera lens, moving up from those hands to Oersted Pedersen's strings. Because there exists so much positive press on the works of Oscar Peterson, one has to approach an audio/visual live concert from the icon as another one of his many paintings in the gallery, there to be appreciated and admired for exactly what it is. What can be commented on is that the Dieter Finnern broadcast tape does a fine job of capturing all the elegant magic, not only with warm zooms from the audience to the master's hands, but also some delightful fades from one shot to the next, bringing all three faces of the trio into full-screen view, cameras lovingly gliding over the drumsticks, bass strings, and Oscar's phenomenal chops. He's a piano version of Jimi Hendrix without the distortion, an Einstein whose runs are filled with dazzling pauses and notes that flow inwards and outwards. Unlike Liberace's love of giving the scales a good exercise, Oscar Peterson instructs those scales on how they can be reinvented, but he does it in such a compelling fashion that you can't resist listening to the way he makes a piano speak a new language all can understand. To the credit of the producers, they keep the cameras moving with the music and it's a first-rate job of not being intimidated by the musicians and letting the film breathe along with the sounds coming from the stage. "Perdidio" features piano rumbles that blend quickly into "Caravan" with the trio in a gallop to an explosive finish. This no-nonsense television broadcast captures the movements with love and understanding; no bonus tracks, just a great show in stereo or 5.1 Dolby Digital.
